Twenty-Ten Top Ten - These releases have kept my head above
water.
1 Samsara Blues Experiment, Long Distance Trip-World In Sound,
DL [Mar]
>> Based out of Berlin and founded in 2007, Hans Eiselt
[guitar], Thomas Vedder[drums] and Richard Behrens [bass] create
an infusion of blues, raga spirituality and experimental effects.
Their sound blends heavy psych, stoner and space rock with hypnotic
krautrock. Available on vinyl from Germany or as a download.
2 A.R. & Machines, Die Grune Reise: Green Journey-Tangram,
CD [Feb]
>> Spacey rock jams featuring lots of minimal electronic
effects and cycled guitar delays/loops. The Green Voyage was
intended as a soundtrack for an imaginary movie. [it's a reissue
and stays right here on my list]
3 Moon Duo, Catch As Catch Can/Set It On Fire-Agitated Records,
7" [Ap]
>> Guitarist Erik Johnson from Wooden Shjips and Sanae
Yamada on keyboards. Plenty of that old analogue, heavy fuzzed
out kraut driven garage sound. Side B is a cover of The Scientists
'Set It On Fire' track from 1991. Rumor has it this duo may
be moving to Colorado.
4 White Hills, White Hills-Thrill Jockey, LP [Feb]
>> Dense spacey droning rock. White Hills did a European
tour with Pontiak in early 2010.
5 Tame Impala, Innerspeaker-101 Distribution, CD [May]
>> Psychedelic hypno-groove melodic rock music. Their
sound is one equally informed by The Beatles as it is beat poetry,
by Turkish prog as it is by Turkish delight and Folk. Kevin
Parker, Dom Simper and Jay Watson. Awarded the Australian Album
of the Year. Touring the mid and western United States now.
6 Red Sparowes - The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies
the Answer-Sargent House, CD [Ap]
>> Severely ambient, somber and reflective. Opened for
Boris and proved they can be the headliner. [thanks Unkle Jeff]
7 The Black Angels, Phosphene Dream-Blue Horizon Ventures, CD
[Sept]
>> This band is the reincarnation of the psychedelic experience.
About a year ago I had a conversation with Alex Maas after a
Boulder gig and he was/is the most cosmic person I have ever
rapped with. These guys live the genre and room together in
Austin, TX. [with some ghosts from what I hear]
8 Wooden Shjips, Vol. 2-Sick Thirst Records, CD [Mar]
>> Compared to Suicide, The Velvet Underground, The Doors,
Soft Machine and Guru Guru. By coincidence I'm into The Meaning
of Meaning right now. Shjips plays out of San Francisco.
9 Angelo Spencer, Et Les Haunts Sommets-K Records, LP [Feb]
>> This LP is good and loose with ethic twists influenced
by conspiring musicians Arrington De Dionyso and Clyde Petersen.
Each time I spin it I let it play all the way through.
10 Gil Scott-Heron, I'm New Here-XL Recordings, CD [Feb]
>> Gil Scott-Heron is a proto-rap artist born in Chicago
[1949]. He also is an American poet, musician, and author known
primarily for his spoken word performances which are often associated
with black militant activism. His most well-known composition
is "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". Heron has
spent the majority of the last 10 years in jail on drug charges,
but still has the nads to put out possibly his final treatise
of the Black experience.
