Music and radio guru Marc brought his Edison Amberola circa 1915 cylinder
player to the Route 78 West studio and led an incredible audio journey for
anyone listening. Marc played 5 Edison cylinder traks directly into a studio
microphone as we all listened with amazement. His Edison Amberola is from
about 1915 and cost about $30 at that time. It has a crank on the side which
energizes a spring driven mechanism revolving the wax or plastic 200 groove/inch
music cylinders at 160 rpm. The audio is transferred to music by a diamond
needle and amplified through a metal horn. No electricity is needed to play
this oak cased predecessor of the phonograph. The cylinders play about 4
minutes and deliver amazing old time analog mellowness. Amazing to consider
it was developed by Thomas Edison who was virtually deaf. View
photos of Marc and the Edison player here. Today's hot trak is, "Yes We Have No Bananas" sung by Billy Jones. It's no coincidence this tune was the first million selling song cause it still has what it takes to please the mind and ears. If that wasn't enough excitement, Aaron And Nicole Keim played 3 tunes in the air studio to promote the Swallow Hill Ukulele Festival coming up on February 9th. Thanks Aaron and Nicole. This show is a MUST download. Music history chat continued at The Rio Grande over giant margs and superb food. Manger Mike came by to say hello and informed us he had played the show over the Rio's sound system. It just doesn't get any better than that. Thanks again to Marc, Aaron and Nicole. Special thanks to Johnny Trash for retrieving John McLaughlin's Devotion for me to ponder. See you next week. Jason Isbell February 4 at The Fox Theatre. Ukulele Loki will perform at Swallow Hill's Ukulele Fest on February 9th. Drive-By Truckers February 22 at the Ogden and February 23 at the Fox Theatre. find out more about the Denver/Boulder concert scene. |
