Sleepy smooth transport. At first just me and a cool urban bus driver. A
friendly ebony lady running the big bus wheel. A professional with old time
values. At each stop polishing the windshield and welcoming riders. Opening
and closing the door so as not to let in the 17 degree outside air. A super
smooth city transverse past Five Points and out to the high plains Denver
airport. It's the day after the storm, but road conditions are good. Right
on time. After security I do a quick detour for coffee, then settle in for whatever till blast off. I have five entertainment choices; Sleeping, writing, reading, watching and music. I opt for a strange brew of mp3s. The tracks play overlapped like folders in a file cabinet. A glitch has ruined my play list. After a few tunes I begin to like the randomness. I pickup on, "Repeat a lie. That makes it true." Lyrics from Shellac's song Elephant. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Wonderful. I watch eyes sweeping the room. We're all in the same boat. Going somewhere dragging thoughts to a distant place. I stare at the stone flecked floor and see clowns, a rabbit behind a rock, a sad orangutan, a swimming turtle, various fish and tail feathers. A sign says automatic and nothing happens. I analyze the room. I spy fake on sleeping eyes. The pain of travel, tight quarters, and distant eyes drilling into my skull drive me to wander. Mood is mental weather. Cool, humid thoughts drive me thru the evening. The landing announcement brings me to the foreground and I notice outside it's snowing hard. I drift to hysterical hot summer nites for one more second of comfort. The wheels touch ground. Right on time. I flick thru cellphone screens and make a call. I hang up the phone and head for a coffee shop to wait for my ride. Get Three Coffins Ready is playing the Bluebird on January 18th. Jason Isbell February 4 at The Fox Theatre. Ukulele Loki will perform at Swallow Hill's Ukulele Fest on February 9th. Drive-By Truckers February 22 at the Ogden and February 23 at the Fox Theatre. More of the Denver/Boulder concert scene. Post show medicine at the Rio Grande. See ya next week. |
