Notes: Uncle Jeff had just returned from an energizing expedition which bubbled over into his music selections. Even so, the stories were kept to a minimum, with the longest set lasting about 25 minutes. Ukulele Loki's green sequenced tongs, Rod Stewart hair and internal clock carried him to the show just as the first break began. I was ready for a quik show after a week of full bore all night box fan hot breezes.

Sunday isn't right unless we're packed into a cramped, smelly, basement studio mixing up Country Music. A spirit of revolt and encrypted messages wandered into the airwaves as today's broadcast slipped in and out of hardcore Country and sometimes balanced on the edge of Folk. Each trak eked out a motif, ascending the playlist to the next level and coming close to experimental. This poses no problem to our regular listeners who recognize Route 78 West goes where it wants and parties at the end of the road.

Terry Fell's, Caveman, bordered on clinker, but the great slap reverb saved it. Nick Urata and Tom Hagerman's instrumental (trak 21) from the February 23th, 2003 Route 78 West archive is my pick for hot trak and best ever in studio performance.

Future shows include Halden Wofford & The Hi-Beams, August 24, Swallow Hill Music Hall. Ukulele Loki's Gadabout Orchestra August 27th at the Fox. Magnolia Electric Co August 28th at the Bluebird. The Apples In Stereo at the Bluebird on August 31st. Jesse Sykes October 19th at my favorite venue, the Larimer Lounge. DeVotchKa will perform with the Yard Dogs Road Show October 27th at the Fillmore.

Post show headed directly to the Rio Grande for margaritas. The cool amber medicine served up in a fish bowl size glass brought on conversation of recent near misses and local culture. Manager Mike came over to our table and joined in the conversation, verifying he is on top of the past and present local scene.

After a coffee stop to reverse my condition I followed a line of electric poles sitting like giant grave markers on the hot plains to my urban ranchero. See you next week.
