Anticipating the point when water turns to ice was on my mind as I wheeled
Route 93 to the Republic for a 9 pm Son Volt/Magnolia Electric Co show.
Slick crystals began to form on the asphalt as I passed the Rocky Flats
Inn, so I turned up Dinosaur Jr. (Water) and hoped
for the best. Just past Table Mesa the skid marks into the curb wrote an
icy mental note to self, "should of drove truck tonite." I crept
along swearing at any moron that came within my review mirror. Trouble was
near and all I needed was to park the car and enjoy some music. Success! Jason Molina revved his bewitching magic for 8 fresh songs. I dig his tight/loose rhythms. My old feet moved en route tribal beats (Mark Rice) and mystical lyrics. Afterthought: each musician in this group is a like a comfy old shoe. Jason Molina (voice, guitar, songs), Mark Rice (drumset), Jason Groth (guitar & voice), & Pete Schreiner (bass). Watch for a new MEC fall release. After a forever setup/break Son Volt hit the stage. The touring lineup: Jay Farrar (vocal, guitar, harmonica), Dave Bryson (drums), Derry deBorja (keyboard), Andrew Duplantis (bass, backing vocal), and Chris Masterson (hot f#*&ing guitar). The sound was good and I spent most of the show stage right, eight feet out... amid the youngsters. Farrar cruised through new material and slipped in some older songs. Masterson did magic on most traks, but Jay came through with his own tricks late in the performance. As in previous shows I enjoyed Andrew Duplantis' bass lines and backing vocals. Volt made a good showing, but I have heard better, especially 6.19.2005. If you are in future tour cities I would still recommend attending... a prolonged vacation for these guys may be brewing. Post show met with Jason Molina and Son Volt... all went out of the way to mingle and sign posters/CDs. 1 am or so Jeff and I left the Fox Theater and slipped into the icy night. Extreme road conditions debunked previous travel plans and I ended up sleeping on the studio sofa... Easter morning snowplow alarm clock engaged the sensors and hot bacon grease fried eggs/slab-o-butter toast and coffee sent from Nirvana eased the morning. Today's show was the all-time record for never before played songs (Easter Eggs) with the hot trak going to Memphis Moon. Ukulele Loki called from Utah and will for sure return next Sunday to bolster the KVCU Pledge Drive (Ap 13-20). Route 78 West's goal... topple Johnny Trash from his ,"King of the hill" position. Till next week. |
