Notes:

A perfect puffy cloud blue sky New Years Day complemented an exceptional New Years Eve Drive-By Truckers show. It was hard to believe I felt ok. Uncle Jeff seemed a little worn.

2006 got started with the fitting, "Honky Tonk Hangover." The first set of "boozing songs" went on for 20 minutes as we contemplated how we felt. I was marginal, and Jeff was... well, worse. The light, loose accordion in Brown Bottle Blues seemed to start a healing process.

Jeff had prepared a playlist and I was grateful. Every so-so he let a therapeutic instrumental flow... like cups of whiskey from the river. Mind medicine. "Farther Along," by The Harmonizing Four lent a religious feel just after the radio description of Hank's new year demise.

The high point of this show was in the third set, fourth song, "Old Hen Cackle," on the highly acclaimed American Primitive Volume 2. The Two Poor Boys were far ahead of 1931 with their bluegrass based rhythm and time changes. In at a close second was Arthur Godfrey's, "The Man With A Weird Beard," which may become Uncle Jeff's new theme song.

Some might of heard a bazaar transition from trak 18 to 19, but I heard Route 78 West's transmission kick into OD. That's overdrive for you city slickers and the shift was from sweet to modern sweet. The balance of the show ran in, out and thru some favorites and a few rare tunes before an old-time, "Sentimental Baby." finale.

Happy New Year to all our listeners and friends. See ya next week.
