Notes: | Started
out with technical difficulties, but everything was fine after Ukulele Loki
reset the transmitter. Uncle Jeff was still bailing out the canoe due to
a weekend Rio Grande float... so Ukulele Loki and I manned the mic for tonight's
broadcast. The first hour featured songs about fathers in honor of their
day. The second hour featured a more modern round of music with a good sprinkling
of Son Volt to encourage listeners to attend their Fox Theatre concert that
evening. After a relaxing dinner at Tom's Tavern Uncle Jeff, Joel and I headed to the Fox for a Son Volt dessert. Jay Farrar and Son Volt (the Boquist brothers + Mike Heidorn) took the stage about 10:45pm and began the show with, "new material." I describe it that way cause I didn't recognize the first 4-5 songs, so it must have been new, right? This was the first time I saw Son Volt and right away I noticed Jay Farrar's pleasingly full vocals... especially good when harmonizing with bassist Jim Boquist. After a little bit some familar tunes (Drown, Route, Flow and Tear Stained Eyes) were added to the mix, each got the "sardine-packed" audience energized. Well known guitar rifs by Dave Boquist's Fender were flawless and especially precise on "Route." The second half of the performance included a psychedelic rendering of unknown title which had my attention. Percussionist Mike Heidorn demonstrated his talents as tie-dyed lights ran over the stage fulfilling the wavy mood. By this time I felt an intoxicated spirit consuming my mind. Nice, smooth, pure. The song ended and I saw a stagehand appear to hand Jay the most glorious guitar I had ever seen. A vintage, golden Gibson. Oh, my! A millisecond and then the unmistakable "Cortez the Killer" chords. I became mesmerized as Farrar let his wild side free. It was a fitting end to my Son Volt experience. I am happily anticipating the new Son Volt CD due to be released in a few weeks. A lightening illuminated
journey home kept me thinking of Son Volt's memorable performance. |
