Notes: | The first set included
a rare listen to some live Red Knuckles & The Trailblazers. I could
vaguely smell the beer soaked wood floors of Boulder bars long gone such
as the Hi-Lo and the Broken Drum. Gotta dig deep for the good memories
and if you're too young to have any just stay tuned to Route 78 West each
sunday evening. Next came a Surf set brought on by Uncle Jeff's eminent vacation and a recent trip to Second Spin. The standout trak was "Casbah Club," which has a mezmorising eastern beat. My mind traveled briefly to a far-away beach... "Yes, I can surf!" Steve Earle's just released, "The Revolution Starts Now," claims to have been recorded within a 24 hour period and should be filed under "politico" for reasons you can read about in the CD notes. I listened to this collection of songs and the stand out trak is "The Gringo's Tale" which begins with, "Beggin' your pardon there stranger, you look like you're new to this town, we're a long way from the beach here, you won't see many gringos around..." Also of note is a duet with Emmylou Harris, "Comin' Around," and a sweet love song, "I Thought You Should Know." If you're a Steve Earle regular you best get out and pick up this CD. You can read more at Earle's web site. After re-listening to the show and pondering over a cup of green tea I conclude a neck 'n neck tie for hot pick. The back-to-back sequence of "Prodigal Son" and "What's Wrong Baby" had a lot to do with my choice. The driving blues beat of the Rolling Stones followed by Reed's clean and simple style are examples of modern blues vs classic. Well... I was out late last night at the Lucinda Williams show so the thought processes are a little slow. The show was very good. Her trademark voice and cut to the bone lyrics combined with Doug Pettibone's lead guitar magic fingers and outstanding sound quality created an instant escape from reality. Her encore of note was a down and simple blues riff... believe it or not my favorite tune of the night. Towards evening's end a tired delivery politico essay by Williams served as an intro to "American Dream," which lyrically repeated what she had previously ranted... I could of done with just the song. Shows to ponder are Local 33, August 28 at The Soiled Dove, Jay Farrar w/Local 33 at the Fox Theater September 11 and the Gothic Theater September 12 (not confirmed). Plan ahead for Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter at the Larimer Lounge, October 8th. |
