Notes:

As 5 pm flipped up on the studio clock a flashing light indicated I better pick up the phone. Loki quickly said he was running late. I already knew that... I had two CDs with me so I started to get them out while wondering what I would play... and how does this equipment work anyway? Then Jeff bopped through the door. Good thing!

A typical run of 78s got things off to a good start, but I really got into the show at the point of the sort-a-surf "Sorry Train To Dumpsterville." I'm not saying I don't appreciate the oldies, but for reasons I can't explain I haven't really paid much attention to music since the 60s. Now I'm discovering all kinds of great stuff I missed. The good thing is the technology is now to my advantage. Load whatever I want to listen to on an Mp3 player smaller than a pack of cards and listen on the move. It's frickin' great.

I think I'm treading on undetermined etiquette by listening to music where ever I go. Last week I started one work day with some odd looks as I walked into the office, like it's weird for a gray beard to wear ear buds all the time...

"So, what are you listening to?" says a kid (19 years old) that works with me.

"Zuma... something called Danger Bird, by Neil Young," says I. "Came out on vinyl in 1975. I transferred it to CD."

The kid's face goes blank so I ask him what's running on his player.

"Beastie Boys" he said knowing I would have no clue.

I didn't flinch... he don't flinch, cause neither one of us identifies with the other's music. We exchange players and listen a few to whatever is playing, then compare the players and pretty much at the same time say, "Cool...good sound, where's the volume?" We hit common ground on LOUD. Then the kid wants to load Zuma on his machine. I say sure, but pass getting the Beastie Boys. We both sort of laughed like 16 year olds and went about our business. By the way he had 19 GB out of 20 GB free space... I had 9 Mb free out of 512 Mb. Just proves us old guys know how to get by with little or no memory... right Uncle Jeff?

Know back to reality. Roy Smeck's, "Steel Guitar Rag," "Rowboat" by Beck and "The Madge Sessions 2" are my "hot picks" for tonight's show. The Beck trak courtesy of Mysterious Ted... your stuff is tops.

Shows to checkout are Rosanne Cash & Jim Lauderdale, August 19 at the Boulder Theater and Lucinda Williams, August 22nd at the Boulder Theater. LATE NEWS FLASH...Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter will be at Larimer Lounge, October 8th and Steve Earle will soon release a new CD, "The Revolution Starts Now."

That is all.
