Notes: | The
show began in normal fashion with Uncle Jeff arriving 1 minute before
six and shoving a Gillian Welch CD into the machine. He sat down behind
the mic and I glanced at the profile of a haggard man. The ol' boy had
been through the wringer this past week and I sort of stared and reminded
myself to take it easy with my comments. Even so, Jeff had prepped a playlist
and the show went on. A few minutes later Loki showed up and for the first time in a while we were all present for another episode of Route 78 West. I felt a weird calmness and maturity in the studio. Loki had brought in some buffalo wings as his way of experiencing the Super Bowl. The aroma engulfed the area, causing the room's temperature to rise a few degrees. Conversation revealed that as Uncle Jeff was lying in the chair "looking for the angels" a Ted Disk had arrived in his mailbox... postage due 13 cents. It contained a killer set of music including High Falutin' Newton and Johnny Bond's X-15. Apropos medicine for a music maniac. Loki had a few aces in his hand including Tex Ritter's Rye Whiskey and Drinkin' Wine Spoli Ol by Sid King & the Five Strings. At one point Jeff addressed Loki as Aaron and I did a double take... something indeed was different tonight and I liked it. The usual banter, but in a calm organized way that made cueing up songs with 57 seconds to spare seem like a lifetime. Everything was on keel. Uncle Jeff's latest predictions include stardom for the "Creedence Like" Drive By Truckers and ditto for the Kings of Leon. At 7 p.m. the studio door opened, the spicy buffalo air escaped and we all departed to our home bases. Shows to see Drive-By Truckers, Feb 18 at the Bluebird, Asylum Street Spankers Feb 27 at the Trilogy Wine Bar with Ukulele Loki, The Crispy Canival Family Spectacular and the Nogoodniks. Buckskin Stallion - 'Blue Ribbon Buzz' CD release party at the Boulder Theater on Feb 26. Richmond Fontaine will be at the Larimer Lounge March 5th. |
