Notes: | Eric
sat in on the show and played a tad of his hugh 78 Rpm collection. If you
were listening you heard some great music, many of which had probably never
been played on the radio. Some of the tunes contained questionable lyrical
content by today's standards, but the catchy melodies made up for that.
This show by far contained the most diverse and interesting selection of
78 Rpm music ever played on Route 78 West. I was amazed at the quality of
the disks. Uncle Jeff explained that a 10" 78 Rpm contains more data
than a high quality recorded song, and completely blows away the quality
of the ever popular MP3. Some of the artists had Uncle Jeff stumped... I mean the music was totally enjoyable, but the torture of not knowing more about the artists was obvious. I really enjoyed Hen Pecked Papa by Ivy Willis. Her voice coupled with the jazzy tune and just the right amount of background scratch and pops had me wondering just what it would have been like leaning on a juke joint's bar back in the 1940's. The Light Crust Dough Boys combined ragtime, vaudeville and jazz with a lucid, juggy kind a sound which preceded Western Swing by years. There were many enjoyable and interesting songs. I thought one of the most musically interesting tunes tonight was Lonzo & Oscar's, Who Pulled The Plug From The Jug. Here again the sound made it hard to decide just what genre it was. Ole Rasmussen kicked off a set of polkas with a Duke Ellington cover... all with a twist of Country Swing. Eric added the factoid that Adolph Hoffner played with Jimmie Revard around 1936. The set took on a 30's feel and touched a jazzy vein with The Texas Wanders. Even though I heard no Alt Country or Surf, or even the once traditional Spaghetti Western I was content. This show was a quilt of music which produced what we know as Country. If this show brought back memories or if you know more about the artists of tonight's show drop Uncle Jeff a line. A big thanks to our special guest Eric for sharing some of his music collection tonight. If you would like to contact Eric regarding his 78 Rpm collection email Uncle Jeff and he will forward your request. Perry Weissman 3 is playing an all ages show at the Climax Lounge on Saturday, October 4. Greg Brown will be playing at the Boulder Theater Friday, December 5, 8pm. |
