Loki ran away to the circus while Uncle Jeff turned up Route 78 West's content several notches with plenty of scratchy 78s, exceptional instrumentals and new releases.

I enjoyed this show for 2 reasons, the time span of styles and the variety of songs. "Car Hoppin Mama" and "Rock-A-Bye Boogie" were successful in showing the connection between Rock-A-Billy and Western Swing. "The Howling Pup" by the Sons Of The Pioneers was a welcome break during a set of Indian traks. Another 78 Rpm by Hankshaw Hawkins really showed off a mix of western and an early rock sound. A duo of promo traks by Scott Miller showcased a modern style and contrasted the rare appearance by Tiny Hill And The Cactus Cutups.

I didn't dig every trak in this show, but the musical variety detailed a span of time not heard anywhere on radio. Jeff's apologies for playing traks on the edge of political correctness were not needed. Musical selections from across the board are essential to develop the overall theme of Route 78 West and to the genre's educational progression. Short sidetracks of Alt-Country may have lost the hardcore traditional country listeners, but I agree with Uncle Jeff's vision to move Route 78 West's content to include "A spectrum of Americana". Route 78 West's evolution is a product of the imagination of its DJs and as they mature the show grows in musical diversity.

Uncle Jeff's tale of a call from long time listener Eric inviting him to review some 78 Rpm titles was interesting and reminded me that the show can rely on its audience to participate in expanding its scope.

The standout traks of this show were, The Davis Sisters', "Rock-A-Bye Boogie" and Scott Miller's "Amtrak Crescent", whos sound and lyrics reminded me of a youthfull Steve Earle. "... when life goes wrong, it just drags on... but just across the river you can change your tune, all the politicans up in D.C. do..."

The show ended with Neil Young in mind... his recently released "Bandit" followed by Blue Rodeo's cover of "I've Been Waiting For You". NYs new CD "Greendale" was released this past Tuesday and I had it in my grip that evening and his recent Red Rocks show is still fresh. Live music is better. Bumper stickers should be issued.

DeVotchKa will be playing at the Fox Theater on September 5th. I recommend this show... get your tickets asap!
