Notes: | "Hillbilly Fever"
references to pickup trucks and nickle jukeboxes opened the show. Loki kept
the dialog to a minimum and the lyrics spoke for themselves. A scratchy 78 rpm version of "Just A Closer Walk With Thee", coincidentally from the Cool Hand Luke soundtrack, reminded listeners that sometimes to hear the old stuff you have to filter out the fuzz. The Riverside theme began with Hoagy Carmichael's signature smooth vocals and flowing piano riffs in "Lazy River". The melodic, psychedelic, whimsical circus tempo of "Sitting By The River Side" was the highlight of the river side set. Glorious harmonys in "Go Down In The River To Pray" placed second within this refreshing, midsummer theme. A spattering of spritual traks balanced out the devil's mischief in "The River Of Jordan" and "Tying A Knot In The Devil's Tail". Loki got in some equine traks that didn't make last weeks show. One which I recommend, Songs Ohia's "I've Been Riding With The Ghost", is found on the album "Magnolia Electric Co." Back-to-back Spaghetti Westerns, Augusto Martelli's "M6, M7, and M8" and Gianfranco Di Stefano's "Jeff Bloom From Shango", provided an exceptional lead to Os Mutantes', "Paris Et Vircenses" of Brazilian Tropicalia genre. I thought the tune interesting and the artist worth further exploration. Congrats were issued over the airwaves to recently engaged 1190 listeners Brad and Annie. The balance of the show touched on various modern artists including Drive By Truckers (BlueBird, Aug. 9th), Wilco, Lucinda Williams and my favorite Neil Young. Regarding NY, I was lucky to be at the recent NY Red Rocks concert and for those of you who may think Neil can't hang anymore... well, you are DEAD wrong. As soon as the show started up I was glued to the performance. It was a lot to take in, with all the stage acting and video, but I quickly realized Neil had progressed to the next level of creativity. Strong sips of blues interlaced with folk and effects through a bullhorn coupled with Greendale's storyline easily kept kept my interest. "Be The Rain" and the only acoustic concert trak "Bandit" were stand-outs. Lyrical referrences to John Lennon and Bob Dylan spoke to Neil's alignment with their philosophy. Neil's lyrics and style were superb and the venue's sound was topnotch. The acting was interesting, but don't be fooled, the music stands on its own. If you didn't catch this show buy the soon to be released DVD and file it under classics. FYI, the encore included 10 electric Crazy Horse traks before ending at 12:45am. Rating=Excellent... and the imported scotch wasn't bad either. As tonight's show ended I remembered Loki's intro "... all the good things from the western genre worth playing that you won't hear on commerical radio." I'd be disappointed if I got less. By now you know the post-show ritual. |
