Notes:

A raspy voiced Loki (cigars) and Uncle Jeff could not preserve the illusion of radio and quickly admitted to being late. After sending out thanks to everyone who came out to last Thursday's show at the BlueBird a smorgasbord of Western inspired Americana with an equine theme ensued.

A classic 1947 version of "Dear Okie", provided by mystery listener Ted, kicked off the first set. Lyrics, "Take my horse, of course I'll take your car in exchange" from "I'm A Tired Cowboy" made the first reference to this show's equine theme. Along with the comment, "This one's (show) for an old pal of mine", had attentive listeners understanding the past week was no, "orange juice fountain" for Uncle Jeff.

A purposeful mix of early and modern traks maintained a calm, enjoyable pace. Familar sound bites from TeeVee Toons added an aire of humor to the show's blackvieled tribute.

Pre-release traks, "Always On The Ride", "Twyla", and "Valediction" by Richmond Fontaine indicate the Portland based band is growing more complex with each CD. They are approaching the same rung as Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt. Their recent BlueBird performance went nicely and my only complaint was the substitution of pedal steel player Paul Brainard for this tour. I highly recommend obtaining "Winnemucca" for your music collection. Release of the new Richmond Fontaine CD is scheduled for this fall.

Ernst Tubb traks from the recently acquired Proper Box Set received rave review by Uncle Jeff and Loki. Be prepared to hear more of this four CD, 91 trak, collection in future shows. See the Proper Records website for additonal information.

Peter Rowan's "Prairie Lullabye" was the show's stand-out trak and "Wildfire", even with Uncle Jeff's commentary, perplexed me. I have to agree with Loki, "Don't like it, don't know it, don't want it".

The show included a late but tasty Al Caiola Spagetti Western and Richmond Fontaine's melancholy instrumental "Valediction" closed the show in perfect style.

Post show milkshakes and big meat sandwiches were had at Tom's Tavern.

Till next time, Jay
