Notes: | The show began with a
set of Hoagy Carmichael
in hopes of convincing Doc of the importance of this artist. Uncle Jeff
is perplexed by the excellent compilations he is receiving in the mail from
mystery listener "Ted". The CD's are great and tonight we got
to enjoy some old radio advertising between music traks. Thanks to Ted for
sending some interesting and historical music to be shared over the airwaves. Gin Mills by The Light Crust Doughboys is where the west meets swing and it's called jazz. Route 78 West also received a CD from Sandman entitled The Long Ride Home. The Radio Works Fine is a good example of what Jeff refers to as "Hick Hop". Music like this could be the result of living near too many noisy chickens, but seriously there are some great traks on this CD. The any point, any time, tweaked wurlitzer of Michael Penn's short interlude was very soothing and a fitting exit from Django Reinhardt's distinctive guitar. The back to back Django/Willie makes it obvious that Nelson was influenced by Reinhardt's playing style. Loki discovered Cold, Cold Heart, a Hank Williams cover, done by Nora Jones. Little known factoid... Nora is the daughter of the talented, famous and still alive Ravi Shankar. The always popular Spaghetti Western was from the album For A Few Guitars More. If you are a regular you probably have heard every cut from this popular release played right here. The set continued with some surf and then into a few blues tunes. Spoonful, written by Willie Dixon, was an especially tasty trak done on the Chess label in 1967 and featuring Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley. It's true... we are not numbers, we are persons. If you're really into surf music check out Phil Dirt's Reverb Central, Saturday evenings out of Santa Cruz on KCFJ, 7-10 pm. Also available on via the internet. Let us know if you have any wacky 78's... we're always interested. See you next week. |
