Notes: | Notes: Tex Williams' Big
Hat Polka opened the show. Uncle Jeff seemed well rested after taking last
week off, while Loki was having, "the busiest weekend of his life".
Light, high pitched background music from "Two Mules For Sister Sarah"
had Loki reeling on the ropes. Jeff just laughed. Listeners were in for
a wide range of musical fare including whimsical Neil Young lyrics, hard-core
country and scratchy 78's. Normal vittles for Loki and Jeff. Lyrics from "Blue House Painted White"... "the party's alls over, they're dimming the lights", could of been referring to Loki's own thoughts of a friend who is moving. The lyrics and music give us a chance to reflect and understand that everyday we are all facing similar circumstances. At this point it was clear tonight's show was based more on lyrical content than audio. Lost In Space had me singing out loud. Yep, it's a fact! The trak is a combination of pleasant, bright music and depressing lyrics. Like a sunny day during surgery. Bird Stealing Bread has quite a similar tone, but lyrically is mellowly uplifting. This Iron and Wine album was mentioned in Newsweek as the perfect relaxing downer blues country summer music. You ought to add it to your collection. Gillian Welch's Civil War reference, "staggers in the jags" bent the show to a Memorial Day theme. Jeff concluded that "staggers in the jags" referred to the hangover soldiers get when coming back from war. Loki told an interesting story from his Grandmother, a soldier for the cosmos' peace. One of the townsmen in Southern Utah decided to decorate all the soldiers graves before walking an hour to the local pub. When asked if he'd flagged J.W.B. Humphrey's grave, he was surprised to discover that J.W.B. stood for John Wilkes Booth -- named after the man who shot Lincoln. Needless to say the man walked the extra hour to retrieve the flag. That buried confederate was a relative of Loki's Grandma who spent her life embracing tolerance, acceptance, love, diplomacy, and peace. The old George Root song done by Ry Cooder "Rally Around The Flag" and several old timey traks gave listeners time to reflect. The second half of the show varied in genre from Dock Boggs' raw vocals and clawhammer style to Halden Wofford's yodeling. A lively trak, "Limehouse Blues", by Loki's band the Nogoodniks, had a happy sort of ragtime sound. Very enjoyable. Jeff applauded Songs:Ohia's Jason Molina for actually letting his band members sing on The Old Blackhen. More Bands should try it. Loki refused to reveal his source of old 78's including the classic Red Foley, "Steal Away" which is the B side of "A Closer Walk With Thee". Somehow a folkie Norman Blake tune got on the turntable and went out over the airwaves. The DJ duo risked going outside the show's "genre box" with that one. The balance of this show waved through a field of Bluegrass traks including several mixes of Uncle Pen. A final set of oldies including Ken Griffin's, "Sentimental Journey" ended the show with a fitting Memorial Day gesture. Unreleased tracks previewed included Valediction, April 14th, Yodelin' Rhythm & Blues and Limehouse Blues. See ya next week. |
