Notes: | Uncle Jeff and Loki had
special guests Nick Urata and Tom Hagerman of DeVotchKa in the studio tonight.
Nick and Tom had us dancing around the 1190 transmitter as they played a
sampling of soon to be released new material. DeVotchKa was recently voted
the Number One Underground band in Denver and will be delivering their distinct
gypsy-polka-punk tones and rhythms at the Boulder
Theater this coming Friday, February 28th at 9 pm evening. See DeVotchKa's
Show Listings for complete tour schedule details. A mix of waltzes and skating rink music drove the show to an upbeat mood. DeVotchKa's Nick Urata and Tom Hagerman warmed up in the hallway as Ennio Morricone beamed over the airwaves. The first DeVotchKa tune, "La Llorna", is a great example of the Mariachi sound. Soon after they entered the studio and adjusted the mikes for a live tune, "Hot Klezbian Action". I listened in amazement of the musical power rattling my senses. I could not stop my feet from moving to the ethnic beat. I'm like, whoa... what sort of style is this? Tom commented he had to "unstudy what he studied" to be able to write the music just played. It was obivious Tom is an experienced violin guy. Jeff went into the 78 archive trying to expound on the ethnic mojo of DeVotchKa, but nothing he played came close to the live performance. "The Mighty River" showcased an amazing presence and depth of Nick Urata's voice. Loki thought some sort of magic throat spray might be the secret behind Nick's voice, but it ain't so! I was sort of giddy from the live studio sets and needed to hear more. Let's face it, live music is where it's at and when you break the momentum with CD traks it sort of leaves the feeling of the canned music at a concert. Luckily Tom and Nick did one last number which they defined as the "DeVotchKa Anthem". Nick's violin went mad... the Gypsy was loose and convinced me to add some DeVotchKa to my collection. |
