Notes: | I need a break from the
chaos and my first dose comes via Jeff's bad Italian and Spaghetti Western.
Through the first two sets I enjoy the country mix without analyzing why. Suddenly Uncle Jeff flashes a CD by Loki which gets immediate approval. I wonder what's up and listen closely to the song. I groove on the sound and distantly relate to the lyrics of "God Bless The Child". Uncle Jeff comments, "It's jazzy, but she's got that kind of down, blues tone in her voice that always makes me feel good". The lyrics, "... yes, the strong gets more while the weak ones fade, empty pockets don't ever make the grade..." are downcast, barely hinting at Billie Holiday's demise as a heroin addict and yet exhume a "good feeling". I'm scratching my head and squinting through question mark eyes. This is a mind-bending break through for me. The mood continues with Bea Foote, Bonnie Raitt and all the way through Skip James' "Hardtime Killing Floor Blues". A unifying message cuts deep and I realize my chaos is everyone's chaos and tonight's entertainment is the result of tortured minds facing ugly uncertainty but still able to scribble words on a napkin and create the poetry of life. I survive through them. Thanks to Heather, Forest, Peter and Doc Martin. Frog interludes from Sounds Of The North American Frogs, Smithsonian Folkways. |
