Notes: | Tonight's show, inspired
by this morning's Skip Pop Scratch Alt-Country crossover, set the stage
for a meeting of the minds. Loki, Uncle Jeff and guest Danny abused the
breaks with impromptu stories and educational soap boxing. The show began with Willie Nelson's, "I Gotta Get Drunk", due out this Tuesday. A Bob Walser trak was followed by Danny's inside scoop. It seems that upon Don Walser's retirement from the Texas National Guard he wanted to make his first record. He had been performing since he was 21 years old and now at 65 Walser was signed by Watermelon Records, Austin Texas. Ray Benson, from Asleep At The Wheel, produced the album and it got NPR exposure resulting in over 10,000 copies sold. He has put out 6 records since then and is a success story. Thanks to Peter for the CD's he sent of Don Walser. The second set including "Widowmaker" by Jimmy Martin led to the bluesy "Dear Doctor" and "No Expectations" by The Rolling Stones. Danny told of his recent "Stones" photo op, which included a quick hand shake with the still fierce foursome. Loki then steered the show toward Boogie Woogie with a tune by Johnny Barfield from Proper Record's Hillbilly Box Set. Initially Boogie Woogie got started in the rural Black barrel houses, and then moved north from Louisiana to Texas where it somehow fused with the whole country sound and influenced the development of Rock and Roll. Dashes of Johnny Cash, Uncle Tupelo's anthology remix and Calexico newest CD preceded Route 78 West's traditional venture to spaghetti-ville. Loki further proved that Boogie Woogie came from Black Rural music by playing "Green Tree Boogie" In Jeff's head the Hot Rod sound was also related and the instrumental cut "Big Timber" by the Riptones' was a perfect example of hillbilly influenced surf beat. This show went all over the map and at times got close to the ditch, but still provided balance in dialogue and audio genre. Hope you make it to the concert of the year... Steve Earle at the Boulder Theater, February 4th. |
